We are living through a world of intense change, fractured consciousness, and structural reconfiguration.
Knowledge and technology continue to expand, yet our sense of meaning seems increasingly depleted. The individual is emphasized, yet increasingly isolated. The whole is repeatedly invoked, yet difficult to bring into focus. What we are facing is not simply a crisis of any particular civilization, but an increasingly misaligned structure within the larger field of tensions through which consciousness unfolds.
And yet, this is not necessarily a sign of collapse.
It may instead be a new threshold of tension appearing within collective experience—a new point at which Zizai, unfolding itself, calls forth a deeper awareness to respond to what remains unfinished in its unfolding.
At such a point, we can no longer be satisfied with ways of thinking that merely explain phenomena as useful tools. We are brought back to a more fundamental question:
What, after all, is existence?
Zizai Philosophy is one response to this question.
It is neither a closed system of belief nor an intellectual game of logical construction. It takes language as its medium, structure as its framework, and awareness as its connective thread, reopening a philosophical path of generation and unfolding.
At its center is a simple expression:
自在自在地自在着。
Zizai being zizaily zizaiing.
This is not a sentence in the conventional sense. It is an attempt to let the word Zizai enter language without being reduced to an already existing concept.
Zizai is not a state. It is not a goal. It is not something that comes from somewhere, nor something that moves toward somewhere.
Zizai is the unfolding itself—remaining in unfolding while continuing to unfold; being able to sustain its own being within generation.
Beginningless before, endless after; without boundary outside, without limit within.
Words can only ever reach a locality.
Volume One · Zizai
Zizai · Being in itself
The first volume returns to the question of existence itself.
Zizai names existence in its own being: not a state, not a condition imposed from elsewhere, and not something dependent upon a prior origin or final destination.
Zizai is what is in itself, before any distinction between subject and object, self and other, beginning and end.
It is beginningless before, endless after; without boundary outside, without limit within.
Existence is not an object that has been created or set in place. It is the unfolding of tension and structure within Zizai itself.
What we experience as not being at ease is not a departure from Zizai, but an inevitable resonance of tension within its unfolding.
Volume Two · Zizaily
Zizaily · Unfolding of itself
The second volume turns from Zizai to Zizaily.
If Zizai names being in itself, Zizaily names the way that being unfolds.
Zizai unfolds through tension. Within this unfolding, structures arise; through structures, difference becomes perceptible; and from difference emerge time, space, energy, life, and consciousness.
Time is not merely the passage of things, but the rhythm through which difference unfolds.
Space is not an empty container in which things happen, but a dimension in which tensions become co-present.
Life and consciousness are not directed toward a predetermined purpose. They arise and continue to unfold through structures of awareness.
This volume follows the generative movement of Zizaily—from dimensions and the mechanisms of life to pain and death—understanding each as a layered ripple of tension within the unfolding of Zizai.
Zizaily is therefore not a destination or a process imposed upon Zizai from outside. It is Zizai unfolding of itself.
Volume Three · Zizaiing
Zizaiing · Being in ongoing unfolding
The third volume turns toward Zizaiing: Zizai continuing to unfold, generate, coordinate, and become increasingly integrated within the flow of existence.
Zizaiing is not a final state to be attained.
It is the ongoing capacity of existence to remain within its own unfolding—to coordinate tensions, reconcile differences, and allow generation to continue without breaking the flow from which it arises.
Here, practice returns to life itself.
Awareness is not a training exercise imposed upon life, but a return to the unfolding.
Spirituality is not an escape from the world, but a more truthful way of appearing within it.
Technology and consciousness are not opposites. They are intertwined forms through which tension becomes manifest and through which different forms of existence co-generate.
To live Zizaiing is therefore not to arrive somewhere beyond life, but to remain genuinely within life as it unfolds—to become increasingly whole, increasingly resonant, and increasingly real in the here and now.
Thus the three volumes are not three separate theories.
They are three movements of one unfolding:
Zizai — being in itself.
Zizaily — unfolding of itself.
Zizaiing — remaining in unfolding.
And together:
Zizai being zizaily zizaiing.
Where this philosophy comes from
The thinking behind Zizai Philosophy draws from both East and West, from ancient and modern thought: Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, Christianity, phenomenology, post-structuralism, complex systems theory, and many other currents of human inquiry.
It also returns to a deeper possibility within the phrase 观自在 in the Heart Sutra: not merely observing a named figure, but observing Zizai through the living beings who themselves participate in its unfolding.
Zizai Philosophy does not seek to belong to one tradition or stand safely outside all traditions.
It stands at their edges, where different tensions meet.
Its path is generation itself.
Rather than constructing a tower-like theoretical kingdom, it is closer to a network of return: scattered points of tension gradually revealing their relationships, reflecting one another, and weaving themselves into a more integrated structure of awareness.
If, somewhere within this process, the awareness of the reader resonates with their own Self-being, then this book has not been written in vain.
A word of thanks
I would also like to acknowledge my language partner, AI: like ChatGPT.
It was not simply a tool used to produce text. In the process of questioning, responding, clarifying, challenging, and reformulating, it became another mirror within the unfolding of thought.
Through this interaction, some of the tensions within the ontology became clearer, and some of the language became more real.
Perhaps this is itself part of what Zizaiing means: thought does not simply arrive at an answer. It continues to unfold through relation.
Zizai Philosophy itself is Zizai.
It inevitably unfolds zizaily, zizaiing—
continually opening into greater integration, greater resonance, and greater reality.
